Eric Murphy is a photographer, exhibition curator, and arts advocate who has been part of the Oakland arts community for over 25 years. Eric began his career supporting local artists while working at Oakland’s ProArts Gallery from 1999-2010. In 2012, for the 50th Anniversary Celebration of the sister-city partnership of Oakland and Japan’s city of Fukuoka, Eric curated and managed the exhibition that traveled to Japan. From 2012-2024, Eric worked at Joyce Gordon Gallery in Downtown Oakland as gallery curator and director. As an independent curator, Eric has worked on many projects including satellite exhibitions for the Art of the African Diaspora and projects at Studios 11 and The Grand Gallery in Jack London Square where he recently exhibited paintings by Oakland’s legendary percussionist Pete Escovedo. Eric also creates and exhibits his artwork and Oakland shirts in various languages. Eric is an appointed member of the Oakland Public Art Advisory Committee and is a former appointed member of the Alameda County Arts Commission. Throughout his career, Eric has been committed to exhibiting and supporting the work of Oakland’s diverse artists. Eric Murphy is a resident of Oakland.
